Mini Canvas - Mixed Media

This week I am departing on my scrapbooking cruise with Unmistakable Creations. We had been provided with a small mini canvas and easel to create a name tag.  We could use any technique and here is what I created. It will sit on our table in our conference room onboard.

I wanted to try a something I had not done before, so off I went to internet to do some research and found Ranger Distress Glaze resist technique.  I must say I loved the result and I added a small cluster to top right so that I could incorporate my name and to cover up and area that I was not all that happy with. I used the following products:
  • I sprayed the canvas with Dylusions Ink Sprays - Calypso Tea, Peony Blush, Vanilla Custard several times onto the canvas until I was happy with the result, drying in between and dabbing with a paper towel if too much water. Allow to dry. Note: I did not gesso the canvas beforehand.
  • Next, I used Ranger Distress Glaze through a stencil in places on the canvas. I must confess I have had the pot of glaze for years and had never used!
  • Then using Uncharted Mariner Distress Oxide I swished that onto a piece of plastic, then sprayed with water making a puddle.  Then into this I simply placed my canvas into the puddle and let it do its thing! Again, paper towel was a friend as it help reduce the intensity of the colours.   I dipped it several times drying between each dip.  Note: I then used leftover ink to ink randomly colour the sides of the canvas.  I allowed it all to fully dry overnight.
  • I decided to add a cluster to top right with a label added with my name.  I found all that I used in my stash - I did colour the fabric by spraying with the Ink Sprays I used.
Here are few more close ups:
The Distress Glaze gives a different result to texture paste.  It seems to have soften the result.
The cluster showing bits and pieces from my stash. I created the cluster (before name portion was adhered) then stapled together, under where I placed the name tag. I did not adhere fully to canvas so that the ends overlap and 'run free'. You can see some denim (from old jeans), coloured vellum, speciality yarn, lace and stamped fabric.  For the name tag I used a piece of previously coloured watercolour paper that was just the right colour - serendipity!
Thank you looking, Margaret
